It is incredible that nations are now coming under pressure to conform to liberal norms. That is the case in Nicaragua, where President Daniel Ortega says a media war is being waged against his country because of its pro-life posture. Calling the media’s pressure “the canons and bombs of today,” he charged that “members of the media specialize in lying and repeating lies!”
It must seem like the whole world is against him. European countries and international organizations, including the pro-abortion and pro-homosexuality “Human Rights Watch,” have repeatedly pressured Nicaragua to alter its law and eliminate Nicaragua’s total ban on abortions. Ortega says the reports misrepresent the national position and view it as hostile to women. He calls the charges of liberal media and the Human Rights Watch “totally false.” They allege “that mountains of women are dying … that is a huge lie, a falsehood!”
Under Nicaragua’s law, “the physician has the responsibility to try to save the life of both, of the woman and of the child…the doctor has the obligation!” Women’s rights advocates feel that the law should favor the life of the mother, not the child, if there is a risk to both.
Ortega was the leader of the Nicaragua’s communist Sandinista party in the 1980s. He has since reconciled with the Catholic Church.
