As the U.S. military surge brings peace to the nation of Iraq – ancient Babylon, the situation for Christians in the nation is growing worse. For some, the environment is not merely tense, it is dangerous.
Recently, a Catholic archbishop was kidnapped in eastern Mosul. His two bodyguards, both Christians, were shot and killed. And this appears to be a part of a long line of violent acts specifically targeting Christians throughout the nation. With the toppling of the government of Saddam Hussein and the presence of American troops, it would appear that Iraq would be a safer place for Christians, and yet, since that time more than 400,000 Christians have had to flee the country.
And still there are liberal voices who insist that Islam is a peaceful religion and seem to believe that a culture informed by Islamic values, or for that matter, the values of any faith system, would be essentially like the culture we have here. Such blind naivete is breathtaking, not to mention reckless.
